Hurricane Harvey & Helping Your Child Cope With Natural Disasters

On August 25th, Hurricane Harvey made landfall along the Texas coast, bringing powerful winds and heavy rainfall with it. After days of non-stop rain, Houston and many other regions were left in shambles, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to walk away from what was once their home. While this devastation undoubtedly affects many people’s jobs, daily routines, and mental health, it is important to remember that children are affected as well.

It can be difficult for young children to grasp natural disasters and why and how they occur. Children cope with events such as this differently depending on their age, but they are all susceptible to its negative impact. Whether your child was directly impacted by Hurricane Harvey or not, these tips for coping with natural disasters are sure to help your family move forward no matter what you face in the future.

    Talk About It

One of the best ways to help your child process what has happened is by discussing the events that have occurred. Explain the disaster in logical terms so your child can fully understand why or how things have changed. Most importantly, allow your child to express his or her emotions about what has taken place, and listen to their worries or fears. By creating a safe space for your child to share their feelings, they will be less likely to bottle up or hold onto any negative emotions. A wonderful resource on how to discuss natural disasters with children can be found in this Sesame Street episode, where Big Bird’s friends help him rebuild his nest after a storm.

    Maintain A Routine

Your child can hold onto a sense of normalcy by maintaining their typical routine in whatever way possible. Try to stick with their normal bed/wake up time in order to ensure they’re getting enough sleep. Allow them time to learn and play, and stick with any rules you would enforce on a daily basis. Many parents feel the need to coddle children in the midst of a disaster, but sticking to a routine can provide a sense of safety and security.

    Be Patient

Remember – each child processes natural disasters differently. While one child may appear totally unaffected, another could display symptoms of anxiety or even depression. Be patient as your little one copes with how their life has changed, and know that it could take weeks, months, or even years for them to fully recover. Love, comfort, and patience go a long way when helping your child move past a difficult time.

Would you like to help Kids ‘R’ Kids employees who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey? Simply visit our  GoFundMe link and make a donation. It is our hope to raise $100,000 or more for all staff members and teachers whose homes, families, and livelihood have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

At our recent owner's conference, our school received several awards. These awards reflect the hard work and dedication that every member of our staff puts in each day.

First, we received the Presidential Award and $2500.00 which is the highest honor awarded by Kids R Kids International. We are pleased and honored that we have received this award for the past 13 years.

Our Gym Manager, Samantha Luna, and her team were awarded, the very first ever, STEAM award. This award was given for outstanding interpretation and implementation of the full STEAM curriculum. This recognition comes with a $1500.00 cash award that will be used for more fun items in our STEAM program.

Our very own Ms. Valerie, who welcomes our children every morning, received the Curriculum Manager of the Year award along with a personal checkfor $1500.00. We are so proud of Ms. Val and all the teachers who work hard to provide a strong curriculum for the education of our children.

Hold on that is not all!!! Our Director Ms. Cherry was honored for the second year in a row to be elected into The First Class Directors Club.

Please join Darold and me in congratulating these women and all of our staff for once again achieving the level of excellence that they have set for themselves.

Before the weather gets unbearably hot (as we know it will in the TX summer) get outside with your toddler or preschooler and go on a fun family picnic! While the idea of having small children in wide open spaces may sound too exhausting, you can eliminate some of the stress with good planning. Anytime you leave the house with your kiddos, a great rule of thumb is to keep the outing as simple as possible. Cramming too many activities into one afternoon can lead to grumpy children and an exhausted mom.

    1. Location, Location, Location – When deciding where to picnic start by doing it at a familiar place. You could even start in your own backyard or at a friend’s house. Being familiar with your surroundings will give you peace of mind to be able to enjoy yourself. Once your kids are older or whenever you are more comfortable, venture out to a local park or zoo for your picnic festivities.

    2. Bring a Friend – Children almost always do better when they have friends to play with. Even introverted children appreciate the company of another child to play with outside. Being outside is the perfect place to spark imagination so having a friend explore with your child makes it even more fun! Plus, having another adult to watch the kiddos means you will have a chance to talk to a grown-up and have another set of eyes looking out for your child as you look after theirs.

IMG_8888-784.jpgAn Easter Egg Hunt can be a fun event for the whole family, but did you know it can also be an educational opportunity for your child? Here are six creative ways your child can learn through an egg hunt:

    1.Toddlers Can Learn Colors

Before letting your toddler loose to find as many plastic eggs as possible, tell your toddler only to collect a specific color or colors of eggs. This will help your toddler distinguish between different colors and make the game more challenging!

    2.Toddlers Can Learn Shapes

If you’re creating your own egg hunt, fill plastic eggs with different shaped objects. After the eggs are all found, reward your child for naming each of the shapes found in his or her eggs.

    3.Preschoolers Can Learn Numbers

If you’re creating your own egg hunt, use a permanent marker to number the plastic eggs before hiding them. Challenge your children to find the eggs in order from 1 to 20, or 1 to 100 if you’re that ambitious!

Is your child’s back talking becoming a problem? Are you tired of hearing “No! You do it!” from your toddler or preschooler? There may be something you can do to help curb those annoying, whiny, temper tantrums.

Instead of responding by saying “You’ll do it because I said so” or “Don’t ever talk to me like that!” there are other ways to help your child learn to disagree with you respectfully. The best way to stop back talk is to provide your child with some independence – but within your own limits. Kids of all ages need a sense of personal power to make their own choices and express their differences in opinions with parents. When parents make all the decisions for them, children naturally want to lash out, and so they do — with words and sometimes, physical aggression.

So how can parents teach their children to disagree respectfully? Read the full article here: How to Stop Back Talking Without "Because I Said So"

Early relationships with parents and caregivers aid in molding a child's perceptions and behaviors in future relationships. Research from Harvard's Center on the Developing Child states that "even the development of a child's brain architecture depends on the establishment of these relationships." Core relationships that surround your child (including you, your partner, family, friends and teachers) will impact cognitive, social, emotional, physical and behavioral development of your child.

    child_care_cypress_tx

This behavior is known as attachment style. Your child will use this as a model for future relationships. Attachment styles include:

    • Secure Attachment: This is characterized by feeling secure and connected to the other person in a way that is supportive and loving, yet independent.
    • Anxious Preoccupied Attachment: Characterized by neediness, insecurity and distrust, this style is about seeking security and completion in the other person.
    • Fearful Avoidant Attachment: Often, people with this attachment style recognize that they want to be close to others to fulfill their needs, but are fearful of being hurt.

Development of a secure attachment style offers your child the healthiest, most balanced lifestyle. Learning from primary caregivers, it's important that parents choose positive role models. The most important of these is a child care center or caregiver that your child will spend considerable time with.

You can encourage healthy bonding by treating your child to fun experiences that guide your child's development and build self-confidence. Schedule a class at Gymboree Play & Music where you and your infant can attend a class, playing, learning and bonding in a safe, fun environment with peers.

At Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Barker Cypress, our innovative infant child care program embodies all aspects of healthy, balanced development, which include trusting, loving bonds between child and caregivers. Our "hug first, then teach" philosophy ensures that each child feels safe and secure at all times. To find out more about our program and state-of-the-art facility, please contact us today.

preschool_cypress_txThe benefits of going to the right summer camp can be significant for any child. Not only are they safely entertained while you are at work, but they also have the chance to explore their interests, build lasting friendships and develop a love of learning. Here are some more reasons why summer camps can be important:

    • Physical activity: Many parents complain about children not being active enough. In a world where so much revolves around technology, summer camp encourages children to get outdoors and get physical with fun activities like group sports, organized outdoor games, water play, and free play on our state of the art playgrounds.

    • Self-confidence:  Summer camp provides children with the opportunity to discover and develop new skills outside of a traditional classroom environment. At camp, they can form strong peer groups, learn how to work as a team and successfully take on non-academic challenges, which boosts self-esteem. We believe that our day-to-day activities and attentive care will help build their confidence.

    • Independence. The camp environment allows children to experience a safe space where they are encouraged to make decisions for themselves supporting the development of vital problem solving skills.

    • Connect with nature. Nature provides an enriching experience for children, providing them with a more comprehensive understanding of the world and deeper appreciation for our planet.

    • Make friends. Camps provide a relaxing, less structured environment where children feel more comfortable with themselves and others. This helps children to develop socially and mature through camp activities that are designed to bring children together and create strong bonds of friendship.

If you would like your children to extend the fun into your weekend family time, Great Play of Cypress is an ideal place to visit. This unique gym is designed especially for children and, while it is indoors, it does have the benefit of being accessible no matter the weather. Here children are encouraged to develop their motor skills and build fitness in an interactive way while having fun with peers.

At Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Barker Cypress, Texas, we offer a summer camp program for children from three to 12 years old. Our summer camp program for children ages five through 12 has plenty of fun activities to keep children happily active and occupied, including scavenger hunts, day trips, fitness camps, and a special Father's Day celebration.
